(fallin' in love with) The Pages

We were just listening to NY band, The Pages, in the office and got really excited and started dancing around in our skivvies on this hot Chicago day. We wanted to share that moment with you. We were well trained to love them: As kids by loving the Kinks, and reminded when The Shins came into our lives… We hope you will love them just as much!

The Pages will be moving along down the road in a shiny black van for your listening enjoyment quite soon. Tour dates are in the works for between July 31st and August 14th. We'll keep you in the loop!

Here are upcoming New York dates:
June 30, New York, NY @ The Knitting Factory - Old Office
July 16, Brooklyn, NY @ Freddys Backroom
July 26, New York, NY @ The Delancey

The Pages, a New York quartet, are a distillation of harmony-laden, psychadelic country-funk, New York garage rock, and their own special brand of epic guitar weirdness, which comes out sounding something like Gram Parsons' vision of "Cosmic American Music." They are sometimes compared to classic groups like The Kinks and Neil Young with some Television thrown in. There's something about the broad-ranging vision and innate peculiarity of the Pages' music that recalls both the great, sunlit expanses of the Southwest and the sweaty intensity of a Lower East Side basement. Their lyrical ruminations are given weight and drive by the foundation of Dake's careening, propulsive drumming, DeGroat's melodically inventive bass playing, and the fiery, idiosyncratic bite of Blair and Orsborn's guitars. Capping it all off are the pure, yearning harmonies that wind their way through the songs. The Pages are releasing their debut EP, Creatures of the Earth, in Summer 2005 on Unsound Records. The band has played such New York City venues as the Delancey, the Knitting Factory, Lit, and Sin-e. They are currently planning a tour of the Northeast and they are working on their first full-length album.

the UNICORNS are ISLANDS: new songs available now!

Following the success of The Unicorns, Nicholas "Niel" Diamonds and J'aime Tambour have now set their sights on their second and newest side project, ISLANDS!

For a short time you can listen to 2 tracks up exclusively and only at: http://www.thesimplemission.com

Simple Mission editor Elliot Aronow says: "I know you've been wondering. Where is Nick Diamonds? Where is J'aime? Montreal? LA? NYC? Since winning the hearts of the masses as two/thirds of the French Canadian band the Unicorns, the pair have been busy travelling around this country and theirs working on various and sundry projects including a brand new fantastique pop group called Islands.

Diamonds describes his group's new music as "F-14 tomcat blah, blah," which is really French-Canadian slang for fiery, shiny and shimmering madcap pop.

Really though, it's wonderful stuff and I couldn't be happier to be the first kid on the block to bring it to you.

This time out, you can take a little piece of the music home with you, so follow the blue to download "Flesh" and "Abominable Snow" from Montreal's (and now your) very own, Islands."

DOIT!

For more information, give a shout!

Odiorne out in July!

Just wanted to give you a shout about ODIORNE. They’re releasing their debut album on File 13 Records in July after a very well-received EP on Everlasing Records. ODIORNE is led by former Mercury Rev member, Jimy Chambers. The debut also features current members of Mercury Rev and Longwave!

ODIORNE
“Heavy Wish”
[File 13 Records]
Street Date: July 26, 2005.

Buffalo, NY's ODIORNE began as a side project for original Mercury Rev member Jimy Chambers prior to his departure from the band in 1998. Chambers recorded with Dave Fridmann (Mercury Rev, Flaming Lips) and it resulted in the ODIORNE EP Want Them Leaving More, released in 2001 on Everlasting Records. The band was approached to tour Spain in support of Mercury Rev; as a result, ODIORNE was officially formed. Since then, the group has kept busy recording and performing live in venues throughout the States and Canada.
Chambers' credits as a songwriting contributor to Mercury Rev include the singles "Something For Joey" and the UK-charting "Delta Sun Bottleneck Stomp" from the Deserters' Songs LP. In ODIORNE, Chambers has traded in his duties as drummer and now fills the role as guitarist, keyboardist and vocalist. The rest of the band consists of Mike Bouquard on bass and Moog, Brandon Delmont on drums, and Kevin Corbett on electric piano.
ODIORNE's debut album Heavy Wish was produced by the band and Bill Racine at Tarbox Road Studios. The album features arrangements and guest performances by Mercury Rev's Jonathan Donahue and Anthony Molina, as well as Bill Racine, Jason Molina (Longwave), James Burgess, and many more. The music of Heavy Wish features intricate arrangements with symphonic treatments on top of heavy backbeats. Each member contributes their influence and the results are elements of rock, avant-experimentalism, jazz and post-punk. Comparisons are far ranging from "a well-orchestrated version of Joy Division" to "a mixture of Serge Gainsbourg and the Seeds."

Solid PR Compilation Fights MS
Jun 27, 2005
Solid PR, the New Jersey-bred promotion monster behind such awesome indies as Hella and Man Man, are releasing a two-disc set to raise awareness and money for multiple sclerosis on July 12. Featuring 34 bands and as many songs from the Solid PR roster, including the Unicorns, Jesu, I Am The World Trade Center and Mommy And Daddy, Solid PR Presents Volume 1 will benefit your karma and your indie cred simultaneously ("Oh, Upsilon Acrux? Yeah, I saw 'em open for Ruins, like, three years ago. Where were you?"). Brimming with awesome bands (including an amazing 54 seconds from An Albatross), it's possibly the best mixtape we've received all year, so cop this comp and give MS a solid kick with your Saucony's.

Need New Body & a summer tour!

Just wanted to give you a heads up: NEED NEW BODY is taking off for tour!!

Dance M.F. Dance! Live is where it’s at! NEED NEW BODY is widely known for their stunning theatrical live show. They’ve been known for wearing elaborate costumes, using irregular instrumentation, and having an overall fiery and thoroughly entertaining performance. Hearing about it from your most descriptive friend, however explicit, will never suffice; Photographs alone cannot document what occurs during a live exhibition; Even a show videotaped would not bring you close enough to this experience. The only way to fully be engulfed into the phenomenon is to be there yourself.

Space is the place for NEED NEW BODY whose third album "Where's Black Ben?" hit the streets last week courtesy of 5RC. This philly-quintent consists of innovative musicians who are also held in high regard by peers and fans as being an artist collective. This album also features a collaboration with original members of Sun Ra Akestra on the song "Outer Space" - and it's brilliant! Seventeen Evergreen, Odiorne, The Pages

How are you doing? Me? I'm a little tired. It is so hot in Chicago now, that it is rather difficult to sleep without air conditioning! Speaking of summertime hotness, check this sh*t out:

THE PAGES
“Creatures of the Earth” (Unsound)
Street Date: July 26, 2005
RIYL: The Shins, The Kinks, Rolling Stones, The Voivods, Led Zeppelin, Neutral Milk Hotel, B.B. King, Jane's Addiction and Bob Dylan www.unsoundrecords.com
Newcomers The Pages deliver an invigorating mix of skiffle-funk sounds. Formed serendipitously and unscrupulously—the result being instrumental bravado coupled with well-forged songs that seem to materialize one after the other—The Pages have been honing and developing their sound in NYC for the past two years. Surely to be a summertime favorite!

SEVENTEEN EVERGREEN
“Life Embarrasses Me On Planet Earth” (Pacific Radio Fire)
