GET TO KNOW SHANE BARTELL!

It’s still hot here in Chicagoland, in case you were wondering! Can't wait to hit the milder climate of Southern California! Anyhow, I’m just writing to tell you about one of our favorite and exciting new artists, SHANE BARTELL! He’ll be touring throughout the nation in preparation of the release of his album, “TOO SOON TO SAY,” in the Spring on Seattle’s SARATHAN RECORDS! I'll be at Shane's show at the Knitting Factory in Los Angeles on Thursday, so let me know if you'll be attending or want to attend - either way, say hello!

SHANE BARTELL’S voice – easy, impossibly infectious and thick with focus – can drift from vague and otherworldly to intimate and realized within a single breath, flitting effortlessly from throaty to smooth, mellow to scrappy, confident to crestfallen. Ultimately, all that somersaulting makes perfect sense: SHANE BARTELL’S, “Too Soon To Say”, takes you through the exhilaration (maybe?), trials and tribulations of a budding relationship. Curiously well suited to early morning (or face-on-the-floor brooding), it is the ideal soundtrack to post-bar comedowns: BARTELL’S voice blankets your most sensitive states. These are seamless sounds, the aural equivalents of deep-stomach butterflies, mystery and promise intertwined.

Monday 7/25/05 Eugene, OR @ Sam Bond's Garage
Thursday 7/28/05 Los Angeles, CA @ Knitting Factory’s Alterknit Lounge w/ Bill Mallonee and Brandon Schott - IPO
Saturday 7/30/05 Tucson, AZ @ Plush
Friday 8/12/05 Atlanta, GA @ Park Bench - Atlantis Music Conference - 10:20pm

"Shane Bartell mixes the sophisticated, turtle-necked, too-suave-for-irony pop-smarts of Burt Bacharach with the high-octane unpretentiousness of a Burt Reynolds road movie." - Details Magazine

"(Shane Bartell) neatly wraps the package of longing, triumph, and frustration into an immaculately crafted framework. Lovers, drunks, and industry folks alike can cheer for someone like Shane Bartell." - Austin Chronicle

We've got a tour exclusive EP available, so please let me know if you’re in need of any press materials for SHANE BARTELL!

A MILLION BILLION has landed!

Mr. Smith aka A MILLION BILLION is freshly back from a small UK tour as well as playing The Wireless Festival on keyboard duties with The Silent League! Since then he’s purchased a Wurlitzer (the inanimate object has become his little baby), is finishing up a BlocParty remix (it’ll be available on www.amillionbillion.com on Monday), has been asked to do a single for UK label Exercise 1, and isn’t the least bit too tired to be working on new tracks. Ah, the life of a musical prodigy…

A MILLION BILLION
“Today We Love You”
[Filthy Schoolgirls]
Street Date: August 30, 2005
It could be a migraine-inducing exercise to reconcile the artistically far-flung reaches of Ryan Smith's contributions to musical works as varied as The Silent League, Stars Like Fleas, Public Enemy, Mogami, or the various modern dance companies for which he composes electronic scores -- but "Today We Love You", Smith's debut solo record under the name A MILLION BILLION, does precisely that. Created primarily in his Brooklyn apartment, Smith's debut is a kaleidoscopic collection that has glockenspiels and pump organs playing IDM hopscotch with the souls of crashing computers, singing robots and telephoned-in children's choirs. Fans of Takemura, Squarepusher, Xiu Xiu, and Mum will have much to embrace here.

A MILLION BILLION
“Filthy Schoolgirls” EP
[Filthy Schoolgirls]
Street Date: August 30, 2005
A Million Billion's "The Filthy Schoolgirls EP" was written and recorded in the span of only a few weeks. While the computer containing all of the master files for A Million Billion's full length "Today We Love You" bleeped and gurgled it's way back from a watery grave (drowning of coffee to be precise) Ryan Smith wasted no time and wrote the tracks on "The Filthy Schoolgirls EP." Scamming some studio time from a local studio, AMB got to work, composing 8 new songs, recorded with the help of Joan Wasser [Rufus Wainwright's band, Antony and the Johnsons, Joan as Policewoman], Kevin Thaxton [The Silent League, Grand Mal], and Gene Park [Loaded Dreams, The Silent League]. In stark contrast to "Today We Love You," "The Filthy Schoolgirls EP" is a collection of lullabies: full of toy pianos, glockenspiels, violins, violas, acetones, clavinovas, and rhodes, following in the footsteps of Sparklehorse and The High Llamas. So here it is, the perfect accompaniment to "Today We Love You" - a collection of creations in the event of a technological near-tragedy for a young songwriter. Clever move, wasn't it? After all, you know what they say, idle hands are the devil's play things...

---
BIOGRAPHY
Originally from Madison, WI, A MILLION BILLION’s Ryan Smith had been touring the states, as well as London, and a brief stint in Korea, playing laptop music for a variety of projects, including dance, live video, and sound installations before moving to Brooklyn, NY in late 2002. After quickly joining up with several bands, including 'The Silent League', 'Stars Like Fleas', and 'Mogami', Ryan began work on what was to be his first full-length, “Today We Love You.”
Over the next year, between solo A MILLION BILLION shows throughout the country and touring with THE SILENT LEAGUE and STARS LIKE FLEAS, countless tracks were started, stopped, finished, thrown-away, recycled, resurrected, and remixed until it felt like “Today We Love You” was the record it needed to be. Almost every track was written, recorded, and mixed in Smiths’ Brooklyn apartment. While also regularly calling on the talents of STARS LIKE FLEAS and THE SILENT LEAGUE guitarist Shannon Fields, SCATTERSHOT’s Jeff Snyder, turntable-ist David Nemerson, and vocalist Meghan McCoy. Owing to an epic computer crash, another A MILLION BILLION project was started along the way, 'The Filthy Schoolgirls EP'.
Although written and recorded during the time after “Today We Love You” was finished, A MILLION BILLION’s 'The Filthy Schoolgirls EP ‘ was released first, in stark contrast to “Today We Love You.” Featuring very little computer work, this mostly-acoustic record (featuring Joan Wasser of RUFUS WAINWRIGHT’s back up band/JOAN AS POLICE WOMAN, and Kevin Thaxton of THE SILENT LEAGUE) is much more reminiscent of Sparklehorse and The High Llamas, as opposed to “Today We Love You”’s comparison points of Julian Fane, Squarepusher, and Xiu-Xiu. A MILLION BILLION continues to play out solo, but increasingly more-so with his band, featuring piano, drums, bass, strings, flute, laptop, and saxophone, playing songs from “Today We Love You”, 'The Filthy Schoolgirls EP', and an ever expanding selection of new material.

All things Ryan Smith, aka A MILLION BILLION:
Piano, computer, co-songwriter/arranger for Stars Like Fleas, featuring members/ex-members of Doveman, Fiery Furnaces, The Silent League, The Tall Firs.
Keyboards/electronics/Theremin for The Silent League, featuring ex-Mercury Rev, and members of Interpol & Hopewell
Piano for Mason Dixon & Grand Mal
Self-titled Mogami release on Public Eyesore Records
Public Enemy remix, released on Koch Records – in collaboration with Scattershot
Bloc Party remix of 'Positive Tension'
Upcoming remixes of 'Don's Mobile Barbers', 'The Silent League'
Upcoming collaborative record with Stephen Vitiello, Shannon Fields, Akron/family, Glomag, Jorrit Djikstra, Pandatone, Ryan Sawyer, Jorrit Djikstra, and Nate Wooley

“Ryan Smith charged the atmosphere.” - Clare Croft, Washington Post, Published July 26, 2004 (in print edition)

“A richly textured electronic score by Ryan Smith, layered with buzzes, whispers, chimes and a rich assortment of soothing and anxious sounds.” - Jack Anderson, NY Times, Published April 26th, 2004 (in print edition)

"'B-Side Wins Again (Scattershot Remix): This bizarre, banging mess of feedback and battering, off-kilter beats sounds like an avant techno Def Jux throwdown. Its tone changes constantly, and despite the unevenness in the song's sound, it's as thrilling and strange as anything the band [Public Enemy] has ever done." - Stylus Magazine

After four years in the studio, random shows, and independent and major label interest alike, Moggs turn up with their complex vs. simple debut record: eleven drum-splitting, guitar-assaulted fractured songs about everything from ESL to animal behaviour.

Written and recorded by the band in an old Victorian manor in the hills of Petaluma, California, the album cues from the last 10 years of Moggs' life. During the writing of the record, they worked relentlessly to craft a sound that was dense and at the same time listenable .... made up of real songs, concepts, and recorded in bare rooms.

"We wrote this album over the period of several years with the intent of making a record by ourselves with no compromise. We set out to construct something we wanted to listen to," said Miss Minor (drums, guitar, vox). "....we didn't care how long it took or that friends started poking fun that we hadn't released a demo. The important factor to us was creating something worth waiting for. Endurance was needed to build up our studio and fill roles as producers, engineers, etc, but not for endless tweaking. We were adamant about keeping things simple ... no computers or outboard effects ... just the sound of this old house and us playing in it.
In regards to their minimalist approach to production, Sir Plus (guitar, vox) added, "We wanted to limit ourselves to old tools and recording techniques like those used in the 60's at Abbey Road. The records done this way come across more honest; something important to us in our own music. Also, we both worked professionally with computers all day, so we couldn't stand staring at computer screens any longer (SP was most recently a systems tech for Skywalker Sound, while MM is a graphic artist for a musical instrument manufacturing company.) .... we'd rather just use our own ears."

Indeed, the album can best be summed up as a masterful work in concept and song, with attention evenly spread between percussion and guitar.

Recorded and Mixed by Moggs at Ausgang Audio, Petaluma, California, & Mastered by Nick Webb at ABBEY ROAD Studios, London, UK. Release in North America by Absolutely Kosher Records, Berkeley, California.

*(let me know if you want a hi-res version of this pic!)

NEED NEW BODY and PIT ER PAT successfully blasted off their Summer tour here in Chicago’s Open End Gallery. Good times, good times, gooood times! An after party developed @ the art/performance space known as Camp Gay [where VOLTAGE resides!] last night in which NEED NEW BODY'S Dale & Jeff played in their other project, BLACK ASS. Zach from HELLA, who dropped by to see his pals, played a public jam session with Jamie from NEED NEW BODY. The party just never stops over here... Can’t wait to see 'em again in a couple weeks in the wonderful land called Los Angeles, let me know if you'll be in attendance! Party on, dude!

---

Experiencing this band live is a potpourri of stimuli: from colors to action, music to all kinds of good ol’ entertainment!

Dance M.F. Dance! Live is where it’s at! NEED NEW BODY is widely known for their stunning theatrical live show. They’ve been known for wearing elaborate costumes, using irregular instrumentation, and having an overall fiery and thoroughly entertaining performance. Hearing about it from your most descriptive friend, however explicit, will never suffice; Photographs alone cannot document what occurs during a live exhibition; Even a show videotaped would not bring you close enough to this experience. Not to mention their one-of-a-kind hand-made merchandise ranging from pillows to t-shirts, tour only cds to posters. The only way to fully be engulfed into the phenomenon is to be there yourself.
Space is the place for NEED NEW BODY whose third album "Where's Black Ben?" hit the streets last month courtesy of 5RC. This Philly-quintent consists of innovative musicians who are also held in high regard by peers and fans as being an artist collective as well as a performing group. This album also features a collaboration with original members of Sun Ra Akestra on the song "Outer Space" - and it's brilliant! There's a morsel on this record for all of your senses...

*Seventeen Evergreen "Life Embarrasses Me On Planet Earth" out August 23!*

SEVENTEEN EVERGREEN
“Life Embarrasses Me On Planet Earth”
(Pacific Radio Fire)

DIGIPACK PRF17 / VINYL PRF17LP
RIYL: Sparklehorse, Flaming Lips, Eno-period Bowie,
Boards of Canada, Pavement, early Verve, Super Furry Animals, Air.

RELEASE DATE: August 23, 2005

Seventeen Evergreen's initial offering "Life Embarrasses Me On Planet Earth" opens with the lush "Music is The Wine" which sounds like they took an old bossa nova song and fed it through a fuzzy computer, showcasing rumbling sultry vocals that come across like a more approachable The National. Though Don't be mislead by the first song, what follows is a like a more romantic Pavement by way of Folk Implosion, taking lessons from Radiohead- not in sound, but in a willingness to find and follow mysterious instrumental threads through songs like "Sazerac" and "Grays". "Sufferbus" sonically breaks open to say "Pound into my head I'm a consumer/ A slave to gain things made in China" somehow turning the sentiment into a rollicking hook. What is most remarkable about this record though, is that amid the whirrs and pops, layers of buzz, shimmering guitars and pianos plinked out as if by one finger, is an overwhelmingly human and open sound.

---

Rock need not bore. There are possibilities. When the songs of San Francisco’s Seventeen Evergreen come knocking at your door, open it up wide and open up your mind – because these gentlemen bring you the goods.

Legend has it that Seventeen Evergreen’s song-writing duo, Caleb Pate and Nephi Evans, met during an elementary school recess in Sacramento where they were found making strange sounds with warped Speak-N-Spells. For years, teachers assumed that the two otherwise quiet and introverted kids belong in an English-As-A-Second-Language class. In a way, they were correct. Music always comes first for Caleb and Nephi. Nephi soon left the grassy pastures of North Highlands-Sacramento after being kicked out of his childhood home when Caleb dragged a drum set into the family living room for an early jam session that birthed the early inklings of Seventeen Evergreen’s sound. These noisy beginnings continued in a house sandwiched between deaf senior citizens and an Alcoholics Anonymous building which provided inspiring and haunting visitors to the new home of the Seventeen Evergreen founders.

Fast forward to the year 2002... After a year in England for Caleb and a year spent traveling the world for Nephi, the two met up in London to form a new discipline and promptly returned to San Francisco where they have been facing the new century in recording studio seclusion. The wait has been worth it, but wait no more. Spend two and half minutes with any Seventeen Evergreen song, and you too will hear the sirens in the forest, the sound of stars in the sky, the gravity of the earth - all in your headphones. The rest is up to you!

---

Seventeen Evergreen will be releasing their debut album, “Life Embarrasses Me On Planet Earth,” in August of 2005 on Pacific Radio Fire Records and will be touring the nation during the late summer/fall traveling out towards NYC’s CMJ Festival. Tour dates will be coming to you shortly!

Let me know if you want a copy, need more info, ahh – you know the drill – hit me up if you need anything at all!
