OVRCAST FESTIVAL TO FEATURE SCENES FROM FOX FILM’S “THE OMEN”

In-between bands at the Vanguard, keep an eye on the screens for scenes from Fox Film’s remake of the classic THE OMEN. Starring Julia Stiles and Liev Schriber, THE OMEN is a contemporary thriller based on the 1976 classic film released by Twentieth Century Fox.

THE OMEN retains much of the structure and themes of David Seltzer’s 1976 screenplay, but there are several important changes to update the story and characters. “The original film had a strong foundation,” Moore states. “But there were several opportunities to give the characters a more contemporary feel.”

KIILA "Heartcore" Out Today!

Breaking News!

Finland’s freak-folk outfit, KIILA will be releasing their stand-out album, previously available import-only, "Heartcore" out TODAY on Say Hey Records!

”Kiila have delivered a collection of delicate beauty, songs that hover and breathe while remaining purposeful and filled with a slow, but no less powerful, energy.” – Dustedmagazine.com

Welcome to the minimalist and psychedelic world of KIILA. From the icy-white northern European country of Finland, Kiila produces electronic-textured, dark and fun freak-folk, complete with some of the craziest equipment that would make a technophile blush, woodwinds, acoustic guitars, and more.

"Heartcore" was originally recorded and released in 2001 when the band was still a duo. It features the compositions of Fonal Records founder Sami Sanpakkila, who has released records under the moniker Es, and Niko-Matti Ahti. The language of the songs moves from English to Finnish, and the human voices rest on a warm texture of sounds from an array of acoustic and electronic instruments. Carefully arranged songs alternate with those improvised on the spot, all bearing the mark of a handcrafted article. "Heartcore" embodies Fonal's self-described motto," small and warm."

Previously available only as an import, Say Hey Records has licensed both Kiila records from the formidable and growing free folk collective that is under the umbrella of Fonal Records. "Heartcore" marks the first official release for Kiila in the United States and will be followed shortly with the re-issue of Kiila's second album, "Silmat Sulkaset".

HIGH ON FIRE ANNOUNCED AS OVRCAST FESTIVAL HEADLINER

The Ovrcast festival, in its inaugural edition, will feature a headlining appearance from Oakland, California‚s acclaimed power trio High on Fire on 6/6/06 at the Hollywood Vanguard. The free Admission music and art festival will also feature live performances from Oxbow, Everlovely Lightningheart, Lions of Tsavo, Nachtmystium, Indian Jewelry, Saviours, Bastard Noise, Boyjazz, Longmont Potion Castle, and Conifer along with additional performances from several others. Up to the minute information on the festival can be found at www.ovrcast.com

ABOUT HIGH ON FIRE
"the apocalypse's doomy, amp-destroying fifth horseman...galloping mammoth metal" - SPIN
"unbelievably heavy...massive crunching riffs and drums that slam like vault doors" - REVOLVER

With a heavy-handed approach and a sound that crashes like thunder, HIGH ON FIRE has put the power back in 'power-trio.' Less a band than a supersonic exercise in conquest by volume and sheer heaviness, the band has burned the metal rulebook and forged a new archetype.
HIGH ON FIRE are a supersonic exercise in conquest by volume. Equal parts molten metal and earthquake panic, HIGH ON FIRE's MOTORHEAD-meets-SLAYER roar is outrageously loud and absolutely punishing. With Blessed Black Wings, guitarist/vocalist Matt Pike (ex-SLEEP) unleashes a devastating combination of bombastic guitar and howling war cries, weaving fantastical tales of supernatural beasts, forgotten battles and rivers of blood over an unstoppable bass and drum assault. HIGH ON FIRE are a class unto themselves, manhandling rock music while locking into grooves that transcend time.

AN ALBATROSS Tour Europe w/ Lords and Lightning Bolt * Announce Vinyl Release Date!

Breaking News!

Psych-grind masters of the spiritual and physical revolution, AN ALBATROSS, will be leaving for Europe TODAY to tour w/ the likes of Lightning Bolt, Lords, and others, in support of their upcoming debut full-length “Blessphemy (of the Peace-Beast Feastgiver and the Bear-Warp Kumite)” out June 27th on Ace Fu (*vinyl release announced for June 13th through GSL)!

“The trippiest record in the history of the world.” – Pitchfork

“Each song is so chock-full of whirlwind Coney Island calliope flourishes that experiencing a little vertigo while listening is not only par for the crusty, avant-grind course—it actually makes the album more enjoyable.” – Decibel Magazine

Brothers and Sisters! Aural Emancipation by the sacred sonic offerings of the An Albatross aggregation is on its way! Their mission is to attune you to the Kinetic-Life and yield an experience gratifying to the soul and the body alike: a communal gathering of bodies in motion devoid of inhibiting, hyper-individualized frame of thought!

An Albatross is a psychedelic sonic orgasm; a barrage of mechanical, jerky and discombobulated time signatures eclipsed by hectic Farfisa organ/synthesizer melodies. Not unlike sitting down with an average American family during primetime television, the music is unquestionably attention-span friendly for an ADD-diagnosed society: unbelievably short, complex, infectious bursts of polyrhythms and spirit.

After solidifying their early tour experiences and songwriting in the studio, a fledgling incarnation of the band in 2000 released the 12" EP "Eat Lightning, Shit Thunder" on Philadelphia upstart label When Humans Attack! The enhanced CD version, featuring explosive live footage that captures the unique synergism between the band and their audiences, followed soon afterwards on Bloodlink Records.

In 2002, An Albatross caught the attention of New York City’s Ace-Fu Label and forged a relationship that culminated in the 2003 release of the 8-minute merciless, aural onslaught, “We Are the Lazer Viking,” an enhanced CD EP produced by sonic savant Wharton Tiers (Sonic Youth, Helmet, Dinosaur Jr.). Quickly thereafter, the band released a follow-up split EP with Oakland’s legendary noise-rock outfit XBXRX on the Gold Standard Labs (GSL) label. September 2004 marked the beginning of the current line up featuring incendiary percussionist Edward Klinger, writhing, psychedel-evangelist vocalist Eddie B. Gieda III, rhythmic contortionista bassist Jay Hudak (who can also be seen playing bass w/ Devendra Banhart in their side project Moon & Moon), circuit-bent breakneck speed-guitarist Jake Lisowski, and Farfisa-master, Phillip Reynolds Price.

With an unparalleled spirit stimulated by the current line-up and several recent releases in its pocket, the band set forth on an unbelievably rigorous tour schedule, crisscrossing the U.S. multiple times and making two transatlantic pilgrimages that amassed a staggering total of 600+ performances. The most noteworthy of these dates included a slot on the July ’04 French Eurockeennes Festival, a March ’05 BBC session - initiated by the late John Peel - and a support slot for the East Coast leg of the legendary Melt Banana’s 2005 spring tour as well as romps w/ metal-gods The Dillinger Escape Plan and Japan’s equivalent to Led Zeppelin, DMBQ.

The band’s performances have now acquired a quasi-legendary status, surpassing the traditional concert schema by facilitating a complete fusion of band and audience. Under the mythical banner of future-primitive/psychedelic entities like the Lazer Viking and The Electric Coyote, An Albatross’ Revolutionary Politics of Dance are executed nightly through their electrifying performances.

KNUT and SENSATIONS Release New Albums TODAY!

Breaking News!

Today, May 23rd, 2006 marks the release of two phenominal albums. One, a remix album of Swiss metal power-house KNUT, entitled "Alter" (Hydra Head), and the other, the side project featuring members of Cake and Mother Hips, SENSATIONS, entitled "Listen To My Shapes" (Camera)

KNUT "Alter" (Hydra Head)

“Music of great power.” - Dustedmagazine.com

Swiss metal monsters Knut are back with the follow-up to 2005’s critically acclaimed “Terraformer” album, entitled “Alter.” A full on (brutal as all) remix album featuring some of today’s sickest producers, Knut is back to destroy you again, in a fucked and engaging new way.

Some artists making appearances and lending their renditions of Knut classics include Dalek (whose super-evil “Deadverse” remix will make you want to kill, or at least scream in someone’s face), Justin Broadrick (adding the creepy and beautiful element to “H/armless” and taking the listener through a journey best described as the soundtrack to the struggle against being pulled into the depths of hell), Mick Harris (ex-Napalm Death makes a dance floor ready song out of “5 Turn Grinner”), Spectre (mind-fuckery at it’s finest), Oren Ambarchi (Southern Lord, Touch who completely dissects “Karn Boys” and throws it back in the listeners face), KK Null (Zeni Geva, amazing amazing track), Francisco Lopez, and more.

In the end, KNUT have compiled a remix album that would make Trent Reznor (circa “Fixed”) blush and give kudos. Truly provocative, groundbreaking, twisted and heavy, “Alter” will easily stand as one of the best compilation records to come out of 2006, and possibly the last decade.

SENSATIONS "Listen To My Shapes" (Camera)

** Members of the Mother Hips and ex-Cake drummer unite for a modern approach to garage rock that meets the psychedelic harmonies of the British Invasion complete with clever lyrics and strong melodies **

** Debut released May 23, 2006 on CD & 180-gram vinyl **

Listen to my shapes. A tactile invitation to an elevated pop consciousness offered by this brainchild of singer/guitarist Greg Loiacono, best known for his frontline role in California Soul institution, The Mother Hips. Sensations move with the natural grace of Roy Orbison, and Buddy Holly & the Crickets infused with ‘70s power trio muscle. Formed in the summer of 2003, they bounce hard like the Soft Boys/Robyn Hitchcock, My Morning Jacket and ‘60s British Invasion greats. In Loiacono’s words, it’s "a macho/sensitive music that explores modern day psychedelia and the feelings of body and heart.”

Bringing in a wealth of road won experience, Loiacono, abetted by bassist Paul Hoaglin (Mother Hips) and drummer Todd Roper (ex-Cake), Sensations rescue pop music from the slagheap of today's charts, returning it to the cerebrally breezy tradition of the Kinks & Hollies. What's more, they build on that darkly tuneful legacy. Not merely nostalgic recreationists, Sensations breathe creativity & sonic verve into every
crevice of this lean, punchy marvel.

Rarely does anything this openhearted come packed in such dense, heady rockin’. Their debut album, "Listen To My Shapes," released on May 23, 2006 on NYC based-indie Camera Records, was recorded in close quarters at Hoaglin's house in Northern California on a wonderful old 8-track tape machine with a ghost in it. Sensations understands the compact power of song, playing like a singles band where the only criterion for airwave dominance is beauty, truth and charm. Sensations possesses all in spades.

THEE MORE SHALLOWS and FLYING Release New Albums TODAY!

Breaking News!

Two of psychadelic music's champions of our time, San Francisco's lush-pop's THEE MORE SHALLOWS and New York's ubber-experimental darlings FLYING, will be releasing new albums today, Tuesday May 9th, 2006.

THEE MORE SHALLOWS "Monkey VS Shark" (Turn)
“Enigmatic and gorgeous.” – Filter Magazine

"Amazing!" - BBC 1, UK

"Monkey vs. Shark" is the latest release from one of San Francisco's brightest indie bands, Thee More Shallows. 2005 was a breakout year for Dee Kesler and company as their full length record, "More Deep Cuts" (Turn Records), was universally praised as being dark, sinister, epic and fresh, as well as being hailed by many as one of the best records of the year, and landing them on nation-wide tours along-side John Vanderslice, 31 Knots, Jim Yoshii Pile Up and more.

"Monkey vs. Shark", is a new collection of songs that pick up where "More Deep Cuts" leaves off, almost like an appendix to the album. Moody, intense, layered indie rock songs with a hint of paranoia and Kesler's hushed vocals that drag you into the deep end.

The 7 song EP includes their stark rendition of Al Green's "I Can't Get Next To You" which was first performed on BBC 1 in the UK and has been described as "a beautiful soul song...with the soul sucked out of it," as well as a new version of "Freshman Thesis" (originally appearing on "More Deep Cuts") remixed by Odd Nodsam and Why? (Anticon).

Sitting at the songwriting helm is Dee (David) Kesler, joined by Chavo Fraser and Jason Gonzales sharing drums, samples, keyboards, and bass.

FLYING "Just-One-Second-Ago-Broken Eggshell" (Mill Pond)

"One of the most original and complex indie-rock bands to have come out this millennium, Flying is a breath of fresh air." - Aural Minority

Just added to this year's Bleeding Edge Festival, performing w/ acts such as ISIS, Matmos, and Yo La Tengo, FLYING are about to turn the world of experimental pop on its head.

Flying is a collective of four artists translating magic words and mysterious noises into chaotically sweet and ardent performances. Howling, complex, disheveled, gentle and playful, their music is at once intimate and otherworldly. It is new-dream-out-jazz-pop-noise-folk, invoking spirits Stevie Wonder, Sun Ra, Brigitte Fontaine, and Os Mutantes. Contemporary points of reference include Animal Collective, Maher Shalal Hash Baz, and Deerhoof.

"Just-one-second-ago-broken Eggshell" is Flying's debut full-length, on Mill Pond Records (see also Luke Temple, Robert Stillman's "Horses"). The album was recorded at home, on beaches, in barns and fields over 6 months. Old accordions, broken pianos, buzzing guitars, thickets of drum claps mingle with harsh trills and murky creaks. Influenced by everything, Eggshell is nonetheless a search and discovery mission, a set of narratives balanced between song and sound, a testament of anxiety and hope; a dense, fantastic adventure.

Based out of Brooklyn, Flying have been playing around NYC and the Northeast for the past year and a half with such bands as Deerhoof, Tunnel of Love, USAisamonster, Dirty Projectors, and Lavender Diamond. Look for their US tour this summer.
