PATTERN IS MOVEMENT Announce US Tour and New Album "Canonic!"

Breaking News!

Philadelphia's PATTERN IS MOVEMENT is back and heading out on a full-scale nationwide tour in support of their follow-up to 2005's Stowaway, entitled Canonic (out October 10th on Hometapes!)

"Pattern Is Movement more than transcend the math-rock tag, and their senses of songcraft and pop accessibility greatly outpace those of just about any of their peers." - Pitchfork

"The band commands the audience's attention with quick, almost classical-sounding guitar riffs and lyrics packed full of imperatives. Frontman Andrew Thiboldeaux enunciates each word like your high school choirmaster instructed, spitting his earnest lyrics into the audience. Pattern Is Movement are sure to turn the treble way up, and deliver a high-energy set that starts and ends abruptly enough to make you swallow your gum." - Philadelphia Weekly

PATTERN IS MOVEMENT creates a swirl of brain-feeding rhythmic complexity around persistent heart-grabbing vocals. They are pushing limits, intellectualizing upon simple instruments and subsequently tearing apart the idea of "math rock" by making something entirely new for all of us to hear. In this spirit, their newest venture was born:

Canonic is a full-length reinterpretation of Stowaway, deconstructed at the hands of the original album's engineer Scott Solter (producer of such fine bands as Spoon, John Vanderslice, The Mountain Goats, and more). In the dub tradition, Solter used only analog ingredients – everything from old tape machines to grease – to transform Stowaway into Canonic. The result is something entirely new, a booming and hissing re-education on Pattern is Movement.

With PATTERN IS MOVEMENT commencing on their extensive tour this September and Canonic releasing officially on October 10, a nationwide audience will have the opportunity to experience the band in all their splendor. Things are sure to be shaken up.

ICY DEMONS Announce New Release Date... Halloween!

Breaking News!

ICY DEMONS Announce New Release Date For “Tears of A Clone” - Halloween!

“Provocative” – TinyMixTapes

“Ape-shit yet sublime, connecting the dots between Chicago jazz, breathy pop and bedroom electro” – Philadelphia Weekly

“A mega creepfest” - Pitchfork

Philadelphia and Chicago based, cooled out and electro-jazzy all-star-project, ICY DEMONS, is back w/ the follow-up to 2004's critically acclaimed "Fight Back!" entitled "Tears of A Clone," NOW OUT October 31st (Halloween!) on Eastern Developments (the label owned and operated by DJ / Producer Guillermo Scott Herren, aka Prefuse 73). Much thanks to new distributors Defend Music / Caroline!

A relatively new band featuring bass player / producer Griffin Rodriquez (Bablicon / Need New Body), drummer Chris Powell (Need New Body / Man Man), and Chicago instrumentalists ilCativo, Ta-Freak-Ya, and Ali Hawkbar, Icy Demons are an epic journey into the nether regions of pop music, hallucinatory chamber jazz, and mid-70s German-style electronics, the rich / warm sound of the upright bass is perfectly captured within the exquisite orchestrations featuring layered woodwinds, occasional vocals, and complex percussion patterns.

"Tears of a Clone" is a tripped out masterpiece of a collage, sure to please fans of Trans Am, My Bloody Valentine, and Louis Armstrong alike. Orginally started as an improvisational project, Icy Demons have truly progressed into one of the prettiest and more abstract jazz and post-rock outfits currently making music today.

AN ALBATROSS On Tour Now!

Breaking News!

Psych-grind masters of the spiritual and physical revolution, AN ALBATROSS is on tour now (and have a new video for "Hairobics") in support of their debut full-length “Blessphemy (of the Peace-Beast Feastgiver and the Bear-Warp Kumite)” now on Ace Fu (*vinyl released through GSL)!

WATCH THE NEW VIDEO FOR "HAIROBICS" HERE

“The six-piece charge through layers of maniacal noise made complete with an onslaught of assaulting guitar riffs, machine gun percussion, squiggly synths, and Gieda's volatile vocal thrusts." Spin.com

“Each song is so chock-full of whirlwind Coney Island calliope flourishes that experiencing a little vertigo while listening is not only par for the crusty, avant-grind course—it actually makes the album more enjoyable.” – Decibel Magazine

Just back from their second European tour of 2006 (most recently w/ Lightning Bolt ), An Albatross are gearing up for their US Tour starting this August and extending through the Fall!

Brothers and Sisters! Aural Emancipation by the sacred sonic offerings of the An Albatross aggregation is on its way! Their mission is to attune you to the Kinetic-Life and yield an experience gratifying to the soul and the body alike: a communal gathering of bodies in motion devoid of inhibiting, hyper-individualized frame of thought!

An Albatross is a psychedelic sonic orgasm; a barrage of mechanical, jerky and discombobulated time signatures eclipsed by hectic Farfisa organ/synthesizer melodies. Not unlike sitting down with an average American family during primetime television, the music is unquestionably attention-span friendly for an ADD-diagnosed society: unbelievably short, complex, infectious bursts of polyrhythms and spirit.

After solidifying their early tour experiences and songwriting in the studio, a fledgling incarnation of the band in 2000 released the 12" EP "Eat Lightning, Shit Thunder" on Philadelphia upstart label When Humans Attack! The enhanced CD version, featuring explosive live footage that captures the unique synergism between the band and their audiences, followed soon afterwards on Bloodlink Records.

In 2002, An Albatross caught the attention of New York City’s Ace-Fu Label and forged a relationship that culminated in the 2003 release of the 8-minute merciless, aural onslaught, “We Are the Lazer Viking,” an enhanced CD EP produced by sonic savant Wharton Tiers (Sonic Youth, Helmet, Dinosaur Jr.). Quickly thereafter, the band released a follow-up split EP with Oakland’s legendary noise-rock outfit XBXRX on the Gold Standard Labs (GSL) label. September 2004 marked the beginning of the current line up featuring incendiary percussionist Edward Klinger, writhing, psychedel-evangelist vocalist Eddie B. Gieda III, rhythmic contortionista bassist Jay Hudak, circuit-bent breakneck speed-guitarist Jake Lisowski, and Farfisa-master, Phillip Reynolds Price.

With an unparalleled spirit stimulated by the current line-up and several recent releases in its pocket, the band set forth on an unbelievably rigorous tour schedule, crisscrossing the U.S. multiple times and making four transatlantic pilgrimages that amassed a staggering total of 600+ performances w/ the likes of Cave In, Pelican, Earth, Sunn O))), Aids Wolf, Lightning Bolt, and more. The most noteworthy of these dates included a slot on the July ’04 French Eurockeennes Festival, a March ’05 BBC session - initiated by the late John Peel - and a support slot for the East Coast leg of the legendary Melt Banana’s 2005 spring tour as well as romps w/ metal-gods The Dillinger Escape Plan and Japan’s equivalent to Led Zeppelin, DMBQ.

The band’s performances have now acquired a quasi-legendary status, surpassing the traditional concert schema by facilitating a complete fusion of band and audience. Under the mythical banner of future-primitive/psychedelic entities like the Lazer Viking and The Electric Coyote, An Albatross’ Revolutionary Politics of Dance are executed nightly through their electrifying performances.

KILL THE VULTURES
"THE CARELESS FLAME"
[LOCUST MUSIC]
STREET DATE: October 24th, 2005

"The Careless Flame" is the second album by critically acclaimed Minneapolis rust belt hip hop outfit, Kill The Vultures.
MC Crescent Moon (Alexei Casselle) lays out an urgent asphalt confessional of Big Apple torment, ghostly hallucinations & white lightening relief over Anatomy's (Stephen Lewis) rickety chain gang rhythms, obscured arabesque guitars & wailing noir saxophone skronk.
Flame is a decibel pushing, in the red collection of scorched earth avant hip hop summoning the spirit of blues in the raw.
So throw yourself in the pit. This is music to burn up to: elemental, brutal, tormented, essential & it will get you moving.

“The Careless Flame” tracks:
1. Moonshine
2. Dirty Hands
3. The Spider's Eyes
4. Days Turn Into Nights
5. Strangers In The Doorways
6. Birchwood
7. The Wine Thief
8. Vermillion
9. How Far Can A Dead Man Walk

Praise for KILL THE VULTURES:

"Dark, quality production, good rhyme flows. If you get high or are the serious mad-at-the-world type, you'll love this." -Prince Paul, XLR8R magazine

"Kill the Vultures is a band hell bent on using beats and rhymes to sound like bent hell, flipping abrasive and dissonant punk and bop samples instead of the typical boom bap." -Dave Hlubeck, Fader

"It's the best underground hip-hop I've heard this year" -Salon.com

"Kill the Vultures sounds like an attack on the slickness of mainstream hip-hop: the brutally lean production style is almost lo-fi, and the rhymes echo the hectoring of Def Jux acts like Cannibal Ox and El-P." -Peter Margasak, Chicago Reader

"While the album's three-part rap attack recalls Oddjobs, the production is darker, wilder and more experimental." -Chris Riemenschneider, Star Tribune

"Over a pounding clatter that's part Age of Chance, part Public Enemy, three commanding voices swing like mad over the racket, like Last Poets on a bed of bongos." -Twin Cities

"...innocative avant-rap that sounds a little like walking through a tool shed in the dark while carrying a boombox blaring free jazz." -City Pages

"This is some Last Poets, Magic Band, gang-funk, dirty-ass, hip-hop, beatnik, smacked-out-jazz business. Take a listen." - Pulse of the Twin Cities, 2005

“Think heavy rock with an experimental edge, some of which approaches the style of Clutch mixed with the Meat Puppets and some of the early Sub Pop bands”. – Live4metal.com

“Oakland power trio Totimoshi's grungy punk metal plunges the listener into the sludgy depths of the human condition. Bringing to mind such bands as the Melvins and Black Sabbath, the heavy, driving songs express frustration, anger, and despair.” – East Bay Express

Oakland, CA’s sludge-grunge-alt-hell-rock trio TOTIMOSHI are back w/ the follow-up to 2003’s “Monoli” and 2005’s re-issue of Mysterioso? to bring we mortals one of the heaviest and doom-ridden masterpieces the world of heavy rock has seen in way too long (no wonder bands like Helmet, Mastodon, Fu-Manchu, Kylesa, High on Fire, and the Melvins have tapped the band to tour and perform alongside on more than one occasion).

Bringing to mind some of history’s heaviest hitters (see Blue Cheer, Tool, Nirvana, Oxbow, Helmet), “Ladron’s” sludge-heavy guitar riffs, hugely-powerful bass-lines, and pummeling drums take their listener on a pseudo-psychedelic journey through space and time, and leave them wallowing in the depths of hell.

A Brief History:

Totimoshi was formed by singer/guitarist Tony Aguilar and bassist Meg Castellanos in Nov. 97'. After a slew of drummers-some lasting longer than others, Luke Herbst joined the band in Feb. 05'. Totimoshi have recorded with acclaimed producers Billy Anderson, Alex Newport, and most recently Page Hamilton who worked on the upcoming "Ladrón". Past releases have included 1999's self titled, Mysterioso? (Crucial Blast 2002, enhanced re-issue 2005) and Monolí (This Dark Reign 2003).

Touring constantly across the US, they've gained a strong loyal following due to their innovative approach to heavy music. Highlights have included being handpicked by the Melvins and Helmet to open for their respective tours, and headlining the Emissions and Stoner Hands of Doom Fests. A live performance in Dallas, TX for Budweiser's True Music can be seen on HD TV and now their myspace site. All 3 releases have seen high praise and their music has reached the airwaves in Europe, Australia, Brazil, Cuba, and the US. Totimoshi continues to carve out it's own path with it's explosive performances, dark emotive lyrics and hypnotic sound... truly a force and new direction for music made by musicians who follow no trend but thier own.

DAUGHTERS Kickoff US Tour * Dates w/ Red Sparowes, Pelican, and more!

Breaking News!

Providence masters of brutality, DAUGHTERS, will be kicking off their US tour in support of their debut full-length "Hell Songs" out August 8th on Hydra Head!

View the latest updates and listen to “Fiery” here:

http://hellsongsfromdaughters.com

"Galaxies heavier than its predecessor" - CMJ

"The band manages to express musically in a short timespan what many bands of this genre don't in their entire career." - Lambgoat

Providence, RI’s DAUGHTERS, are back w/ the follow-up to their “Canada Songs” album (Robotic Empire, 2003) w/ “Hell Songs,” an entirely new approach to music in general. Giving new meaning to the word brutal, DAUGHTERS have expanded their minds and abilities, introducing unholy and outrageous new elements to their sound, leaving behind whatever could be considered typical within their genre, and fitting in perfectly to the monstrous Hydra Head roster. At times sounding like label-mates Oxbow or cult-legends Arab-on-Radar (on steroids), “Hell Songs” hits like a Mac Truck, pummeling its listener in a way that is, to-date, unmatched.

"What the fuck you guys? The vocals: What happened to them?”
- A fan posting on Daughters’ MySpace page

After staking out a reasonably comfortable bus-stop bench near the same wretched intersection where Lightning Bolt, the Locust, Oxbow and the Dillinger Escape Plan work their filthy corners, Providence, Rhode Island’s Daughters slowly unzipped and whipped out 2003’s Canada Songs (Robotic Empire). The art-school kids shit themselves; Some Girls, Melt Banana and Doomriders went on tour with them, and the dudes over at Three One G asked them to cover a Birthday Party song (”Marry Me (Lie! Lie!)”) for a tribute compilation (Release the Bats). Last but not least, the pimps at Hydra Head came calling for sloppy seconds. They brought a bottle of Cristal, a pile of limited-edition colored vinyl and some Astroglide; pants were charmed down to at least knee-level, and nine months later, a misshapen fetus called Hell Songs was delivered by Andrew Schneider (Scissorfight, Blue Man Group, Cave In, Keelhaul).

Within seconds, it began sucking greedily at the teat of mass dissemination. It was an ugly little bastard, with an encephalitic head, and it looked suspiciously like the mailman. It shit its pants a lot, just like those goddamn art school kids, and it would not fucking shut up. So, like the socially responsible parents they are, Daughters sent it out into the world to become a twitchy, axe murderer/chronic masturbator type with a veritable laundry list of physical and mental deficiencies. Nobody hires fidgety miscreants like this anymore (not even Catholic schools), so Hell Songs returned to that wretched intersection, looking vaguely familiar to the locals, only sweatier and more viciously deranged.

Sometimes that bus stop becomes too much to withstand; sometimes he/she drinks too much and puts the lotion in the basket. Sometimes he/she forgets to take his/her medication. But that’s okay; there are some things modern medicine will never cure. He/she is looking at you right now, as a matter of fact, and he/she thinks youíre kind of cute.

LEWIS & CLARKE Announce East Coast Tour w/ Black Swans * Vinyl-Only Live 12"(!)

Breaking News!

Pennsylvania's soon-to-be folk hero LEWIS & CLARKE have just announced the release of a vinyl-only live 12" to coincide w/ upcoming East Coast Tour Dates w/ The Black Swans!

"A gifted newcomer" -MAGNET

"A whisper of an album, lovely without being precious, moody without being beleaguering." - No Depression

Following the acclaimed release of Bare Bones and Branches, Lou Rogai emerges from the mountains of Pennsylvania with a new delivery: a 12" vinyl-only limited edition release of the now infamous and much sought-after radio performance, Live on WPRB (Listen HERE). This offering bridges the gap between 2005's Bare Bones and Branches and the upcoming 2007 release of Blasts of Holy Birth.

Originally broadcast in February 2006 on Jon Solomon's Keeping Score At Home, this live recording captures the beauty and magic of a transitional metamorphosis. The loose, relaxed versions of past songs blend with fresh workings of new material, setting the ambience (including chimes, Indian drones, Rogai's baby son, all part of the performance), and making for a unique and satisfying listening experience. Players include Rogai, Dave Ulrich, Alejandro Bjorg (Man Man) and The Expeditionary Grace Singers. "The vinyl is simply about preservation of a special moment in time, keeping it sacred." Now we can enjoy the complete tactile experience on vinyl, with artwork drawn by J. Patrick Walsh III, handscreened by the musicians, and delivered on Rogai's own La Société Expéditionnaire.

Meanwhile, Blasts of Holy Birth is complete and ready for release in February 2007 by La Société Expéditionnaire and various licensors abroad. An album of beauty; linear and serpentine, it is a testament to a cyclical journey through eastern meditations, inherent folk stylings, and a tribute to all birth, metaphor and device. Recorded by Dan McKinney (of The Original Sins) and featuring the contributions of Eve Miller (Rachel's) and Alejandro Bjorg (Man Man), Blasts of Holy Birth resonates authenticity, beauty, and otherworldly experience, bringing forth a back-to-the-earth sound with a most elegant touch.

In between albums, Rogai is touring solo, referring to Lewis & Clarke as a project that is " a ship crafted for many, but navigable by one."

SOME ACTION Announce Debut Full-Length on Gigantic!

Breaking News:

NYC punk-rock powerhouse SOME ACTION Announce The Release of Their Debut Full-Length “The Band That Sucked The Life Out Of Rock N’ Roll and Killed Itself in the Process,” out October 3rd on Gigantic Music!

"Some Action has got more down and dirty rock n' roll action then they know what to do with." - Outburn Magazine

"This is what a real rock n' roll band should sound like" - Maximun RockNRoll

Never have truer words been spoken. Some Action is the New York punk revival troupe who sound as if they’ve ordered the largest shot of Fuck You, no chaser, and pounded the hell out of it.

Reminiscent of early and legendary punk outfits (see The Queers, The Buzzcocks, Gun Club), “The Band That Sucked The Life Out Of Rock N’ Roll and Killed Itself in the Process,” is Some Action’s debut full-length, and already the band has been receiving massive fan fare by both press and fellow bands alike. Having played alongside punk legends 999 and John Spencer Blues Explosion, Some Action has also made fans out of psycho-punx Turbonegro and press outlets around the world… and rightly so.

With punk-rock anthem sing-alongs like STAB, love song ballads like What’s It Gonna Take, and turn-the-volume-to-11-and-blow-you-through-the-wall live shows, the intensity of Some Action is unmatched by just about any New York (or otherwise) bands claiming to bring the noise.

The band recalls an attitude that has been so greatly missing in today’s punk-rock scene, care-free and balls out, Some Action is here to remind us all just what rock n’ roll should be about. The Band That Sucked The Life Out Of Rock N’ Roll and Killed Itself in the Process should undoubtedly make fans out of the Little Steven’s Underground Garage fanbase and newcomers alike.

Band Bio:
Broken bottles, broken instruments, broken bones, broken hearts – the only thing Some Action might ever fix is rock and roll. They’re outlaws in a city where dancing and smoking are illegal, outcasts in a genre where style shines over substance and outnumbered by faux fashion bands full of retro rockers. And yet, here they are: the kids have spoken, the beer has been spilled, many of us have been waiting for this but few are prepared.

The tale of Some Action’s formation is byzantine and boozy, but all members escaped their own version of suburban hell to make big, rotten noise in the Big Rotten Apple. Guitarist Ethan Campbell knows what it means to ‘live free or die’ in New Hampshire while it was more of a ‘skate or die’ situation for bassist John Gatland in Long Island. Singer Ian Magee came to town via the streets of Baltimore while drummer Zac Shaw headed downstate from the rock star retirement home of Woodstock.

Hook-heavy punk rock is delivered at top volume and velocity without a hint of jaded cynicism or plastic posing. These are the two-minute blasts of sugar and sandpaper that caused Turbonegro to remark, “you’re the New York version of us!” With explosive and unpredictable live shows, Some Action quickly built a buzz that rivals most inhalant benders. Besides numerous shows with their good friends in The Star Spangles, the band has played alongside 999, Detroit Cobras, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, The Little Killers and The Witnesses, to name a few.

In the summer of 2003 - one year after forming - Some Action was tapped by Gigantic Music to release a debut EP. Now four years into their existence, they are prepared to drop their first official full length: The Band That Sucked The Life Out Of Rock ‘n Roll And Killed Itself In The Process. Think Iggy, New Bomb Turks, the Reigning Sound, the Queers; think of raw, aggressive, lo-fi garage rock with melodies to spare. Some Action harken the great days of Crypt records while simultaneously giving us a guilty pleasure pop aesthetic. In fact, listeners report having more fun listening to the record than having sex, which either means that New York's more dead than we thought, or that Some Action are actually living up to their name.

SOME ACTION Live:

August 16th @ The Mercury Lounge in NYC (Record Release Show for the "Fine China" single c/o Gigantic Music)

HOUR OF THE WOLF "Power of the Wolf" (Limekiln)

"Hour of the Wolf uses instruments as weapons."
-Ted Williams, Marine Corps Combat Pilot and Major League Baseball Hall of Famer*

"Hour of the Wolf shits rock n' roll and wipes their asses with active hand grenades."
- Barb Bush, former first lady of the United States of America and best selling author**

YES YES YES! This is the Hour Of The Wolf, a time for punk rock to show it’s balls again! Hour Of The Wolf is the Arizona based hardcore-punk outfit who brings to mind some of the best the scene has EVER seen. With comparisons to AFI, The Misfits, and Black Flag abound, Hour Of The Wolf play fast and unyielding and shows no mercy, they are here to beat their listener into submission and leave them wanting more. Featuring ex-members of the hugely popular and now defunct powerhouse, Life in Pictures, HOTW is picking up where the intensity left off, continuing the carnage and energy that made their former band enormously popular in the hardcore community, landing them on bills with the likes of Converge, Cave In, As I Lay Dying, Every Time I Die, and more.

After a summer tour alongside punk legends Against All Authority, Hour Of The Wolf are ready to bring their power front and center to their fans nation-wide.

THE 101 "Numbers" (Limekiln)

Recorded by Ian Love and mastered by Nathan James, Numbers shows off the amazing songwriting skills of Eric Richter and crew with the production tastefully bigger than anything they've done before. As tough as it is to imagine, The 101 have never sounded so good.

Eric Richter continues to define The 101’s infectiously catchy sound, combining the finely honed atmospheric touch of his previous band Antarctica, with the emotive drive of his Christie Front Drive years, to create a well-crafted rock album with no end to its emotional depth or sense of tasteful simplicity.

WIRES ON FIRE s/t (Buddyhead)

Wires On Fire, a collective of four young men from Los Angeles, have created a name for themselves with their balls-out live set, full of blood, sweat, and saliva.

While the chaotic punk rock passion and energy from their acclaimed Homewrecker EP remains, the band has taken steps in a different direction on their new Self-Titled full-length debut. Wires On Fire have created an innovative style with hopes to inspire a new breed of rock and roll for this generation of colorless music.

Each track on the 12-song monster reveals a different side of Wires On Fire, with influences from The Birthday Party, Black Sabbath, Neil Young, The Damned and the The Beach Boys peeking through. The addition of singer/guitarist Evan Weiss’ younger (as in fresh-out-of-high-school) brother, Darren, on drums has given the band an even more explosive and dynamic edge. This observation is not only apparent during their live shows, but became evident while recording this Self-Titled debut with Alain Johannes and Natasha Shneider (Queens of The Stone Age, Mark Lanegan Band, Eleven).

After booking several national and west coast tours on their own (sharing the stage with Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Fall, Death From Above 1979, Pretty Girls Make Graves, Dillinger Escape Plan, Mclusky, Hella, Two Gallants, etc.) Wires On Fire stand out from the rock band masses as a unique -- perhaps unclassifiable -- group. No genre aptly captures their sound, nor do they fit within a particular fan base. Still, these off-the-wall individuals are just as motivated to play for their merch guy as opening for any one of their influences (who are so diverse any laymen would asphyxiate trying to figure out where the unique strands in their layered passion came from). And if you can figure out where these cowboys came from, you will still asphyxiate. Assaultive, yet loving, these young hearts are free…

SHAT "Cuntree" (Buddyhead)

New Jersey's SHAT is the twisted genius of band mastermind and singer Jeff Wood, formerly of such bands DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN and M.O.D. Shat is similar to G.G. Allen and 2 Live Crew hanging out with James Hetfield (circa 1986 when he still pounded beers like they were going out of style). Jeff Wood is also an underground porno star/celebrity, has starred in a porno for Burning Angel (a division of Vivid) and is one of the few people alive who can say they actually have a bullet in their head.

MODWHEELMOOD "Enemies & Immigrants" (Buddyhead)

Led by current Nine Inch Nails member Alessandro Cortini, and accompanied by former Abandoned Pools guitarist Pelle Hillstrom, Modwheelmood's sound is best described as "alternative pop electronica", yet is a stimulating departure from the typical laptop based bands who label themselves as "electronica". "Enemies & Immigrants", their first release on Buddyhead, was largely conceived and recorded by Alessandro Cortini in hotel rooms across the world whilst on tour with Nine Inch Nails.

KAIJU BIG BATTEL Returns To NYC This Friday!

The NY Post Reports:

JAPANESE RUBBER MUTANTS +
'PRO' WRESTLING + BROAD COMEDY = KAIJU

Monster mania is heading to New York, sweeping up any errant hipsters, skaters, art school kids and comic book nerds in its path.
The Boston-based Kaiju Big Battel comedy show takes over Brooklyn's Warsaw Club this Friday, bringing a hybrid of American pro wrestling, Godzilla style-Japanese monster movies and pop culture parody.

Originally created by then art student Randy Borden in 1995 for a short film that never materialized, Kaiju (Japanese for "mysterious beast") has since evolved into a full-fledged show, with live rock bands and brawling monsters made of foam and rubber. Every Battel promises a truly bizarre, unique and entertaining spectacle.

Going by names like the Plantain Twins, Kung Fu Chicken Noodle and Call-Me-Kevin, the "monsters" throw themselves around metal cages and wrestling rings, all to advance the causes of good or evil.

The 11-year-old Kaiju has spawned a whole series of related merchandise, ranging from T-shirts and greeting cards to pocket disco balls and pieces of "monster meat" (actual bits of previously killed off Kaiju characters), while developing an obsessive fan base that giddly awaits every live Big Battel showdown.

While Kaiju's fans have always belonged to the indie-rock-artsy-crowds, Chief Kaiju Officer, writer-producer and co-creator David Borden (Randy's brother), says Kaiju's most significant new audience is actually from the anime world.

"Those [anime] geeks - I love them as fans because they're super positive and super excited - they're not all jaded and sarcastic like some of our indie-rock kids."

And some story lines they have: A Nazi bio-engineering experiment now bent on world domination, pure-evil Dr. Cube is a block-headed (literally), babbling, despotic psycho; Incompetent Super Wrong is a time traveler from the future, hoping to stop his ancestor from enslaving the human race; and the once-lazy Silver Potato is now a government-subsidized crime stopper.

The Kaiju monster world's comings and goings are updated weekly online at kaiju.com, Borden says, because "we have all these loose ends and conflicts that need to be resolved. The show resolve a bunch of issues, but then open a whole new can of worms to propel the story."

Plot advancement aside, shows typically feature sights like guys wearing 100-pound costumes and doing back flips off 8-foot tall cages, into the middle of a ring.

As for who's inside the costumes, Borden says his "monsters" come from all walks of life - they include street performers, break dancers, actors, martial artists and even an ex-boxer.

None of the performers have any real wrestling experience, though. "We borrow a lot from the wrestling moves," Borden says, "like the high-flying stuff, from lucha libre, the Mexican masked wrestling.

"We spin it like [pro] wrestling, that it's entirely real. But it's fully choreographed and scripted for safety reasons. Otherwise people are going to have broken bones and stitches above their eyes."

While Kaiju Big Battel has yet to stage a show in Japan - the source of all it's inspiration - the recently released and subtitled DVDs have been a huge hit there.

"They think it's awesome," Borden says. "They're so used to reinterpreting American youth culture and, for once, they're seeing the opposite - these crazy Americans tackling their own phenomenon."

AD ASTRA PER ASPERA Announce Debut Full Length on Sonic Unyon!

Ad Astra Per Aspera announce the release of their debut full-length entitled Catapult Calypso, out October 3rd on Sonic Unyon!

Welcome to the dark and truly fucked world of Lawrence, Kansas’ Ad Astra Per Aspera. YEAH!

Taking cues from bands like Blood Brothers, Man Man, Nation of Ulysses and other avant-dark, well constructed chaotic-punk-rock, Ad Astra showcases their talent as the current leader of the post-rock movement.

The band, who has been making waves in the underground through word of mouth from the kids (since 2002), is ready to bring its sound to the masses w/ their debut release w/ Canada’s Sonic Unyon Records (A Northern Chorus, Aereogramme, Raising the Fawn), and was recently nominated as best punk band from Kansas City’s local Pitch Weekly Newspaper.

With “Catapult Calypso,” (set for release on October 3rd) AAPA add a mix of Latin flavor to it’s brand of punk madness, at times almost sounding like a hopped up Manu Chao. At other times, Middle Eastern guitar twangs fill their songs, brining to mind an opium induced Bollywood freak-out. With “Everybody Lets Me Down” the band sound eerily reminiscent of a younger Ryan Adams (country rhythms and string sections add an element of both humor and beauty). No matter the elements, Ad Astra’s sound is full, hypnotic, mesmerizing, and truly one of a kind.
