RX Bandits are fearless. In a nervous era of record label focus groups, marketing strategies, and narrowly defined micro genres, it seems that the idea of the Transcendently Great Rock & Roll Band has been lost. Fortunately for us all, Southern California’s RX Bandits seem to have become exactly that. Featuring core members of the abstract freak-out collective The Sound of Animals Fighting, RX bandits are a five-limbed live beast that thrives on a collaborative spirit of constant musical evolution. Their latest release, 2006’s …And the Battle Begun is living proof that experimental music needn’t sound as if it were composed on calculators, that a band can be “prog” without the slightest hint of grandiosity, and that songs with advanced technical instrumentation and complex arrangements can make you move.

Recorded in a live studio setting rarely heard on modern albums, …And the Battle Begun is a blisteringly cohesive organic opus of genre-leaping music, blending socially conscious lyrics with a soulful presentation that is propelled by a gravity-defying rhythm section. The band moves as one through difficult changes and improvisations, covering a vast territory of styles that ventures seamlessly from cataclysmic guitar riffs to reggae-inspired multi-layered grooves, always staying a step ahead of the listener. In keeping with Rx Bandit’s philosophy of following their own path, …And the Battle Begun was released to critical acclaim on the band’s own label, Mash Down Babylon Records. Rainydawg radio exclaimed “…I only can wait and wonder how they are going to top ...And the Battle Begun, and indeed, if that's really possible.” Or, as Sputnikmusic put it “…And The Battle Begun is a monster of an album.”
